PECIAL FATHER’S DAY SCREENING
JOSH AND BENNY SAFDIE’S DADDY LONGLEGS
SUNDAY JUNE 20, 11:10am
IFC CENTER (6th Ave at 3rd St.)

This Father’s Day, the IFC Center is hosting a special screening of Josh and Benny Safdie’s acclaimed film DADDY LONGLEGS, one of the richest and most complex depictions of fatherhood in recent memory. Divorced and alone, Lenny (played by Ronald Bronstein with a startling mix of charm and self-absorption) is the father of two young boys who he gets to see a couple of weeks a year. He cherishes these days with the kids, being both stern parent and lovable buddy, inventing myths and somehow living them, all while working overtime in the big city. When the going gets tough, Lenny uses some unusual, perhaps even hazardous, techniques to keep the kids safe from the world. With a fluid style, the Safdie brothers capture the magic of parenthood, invoking memories of their inventive dad from their own childhood.

In this savage comedy about deceit and sibling rivalry, two estranged brothers, Rudy and Paul, have nothing in common but their love for the same woman. When Paul whisks her away to a romantic mountain retreat, the lovers have no idea that Rudy has made it there first. From the shadows of the posh chalet, he tries desperately to sabotage the relationship in director Bryan Poyser’s brilliantly executed game of cat and mouse.

“[A] lovely hair-raising film”–A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“Darkly funny.”–Rob Nelson,Variety

“Utterly real and daringly intense.”–Richard Brody, The New Yorker

Lenny (Bronstein in a performance that The New Yorker called brilliant and audacious), a divorced dad with the maturity of Peter Pan and the playful streak of an imp on acid, has custody of his two young sons for two weeks. What begins as an anarchic lark descends into chaos and dangerous living as Lenny continues to heed lower Manhattan’s call of the wild while juggling his job as a movie theater projectionist with the demands of parenthood, falling earnestly and amazingly short of the mark all around. Directors Josh and Benny Safdie, who loosely based the story on their own childhood experiences, bring hilarity and terror to this saga of life on the edge. 35mm. (BS)

Directors Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie will be present for audience discussion at all screenings on Friday and Saturday.

“An impressive experiment in genre in more ways than one: a pulp fiction of troublesome dames and distinctly costumed villains, wedded to conversational comedy, while also a subtle exploration of friendship… Nobody does unspoken tension and unforced sensuality quite like Aaron Katz.” —LA Weekly

When his life in Chicago implodes, forensic science graduate Doug gives up his pursuit of science and returns to Portland, Oregon to work in an ice factory, read Sherlock Holmes novels, spend time with his sister, and generally mope around. Yet, just as director Aaron Katz lures the viewer into expecting another study of 20-something ennui, he turns the plot on its head when Doug’s ex-girlfriend mysteriously disappears. With sublimely lyrical visuals by cinematographer Andrew Reed, Katz (Dance Party, USA) ratchets up the suspense while playfully riffing on the standard mystery genre tropes, casting Doug’s sister as the Watson character and reimagining that relationship as an exploration of familial communication.

“Does a superb job of tapping into a lot of our worst nightmares with some dark, intelligent comedy, and then completely screws us over by making it relatable and believable.” —Cinematical

In the dog house with his wife, sleeping in his car, and working as a census taker, 30-something Rudy (a hilariously deadpan Chris Doubek) sees his life go from bad to worse when his brother (Alex Karpovsky), the author of a successful Harry Potter knockoff, rolls into town and vies for his ex. Bryan Poyser’s dark comedy mines the rich terrain of sibling rivalry with a flurry of caustic one-liners. Yet it’s the film’s melancholic undercurrent—an evocation of the bitterness engendered by a lifetime of small failures and petty jealousies—that imbues Lovers of Hate with an unexpected resonance.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn
With Mads Mikkelson, Jamie Sives, Gary Lewis

Denmark / UK, 2009, 100 min
NY Premiere!

“Gestures are deliberate and stylized, as though from a Japanese Noh play. The gorgeous primitive scenery seems straight out of a Terrence Malick movie, and the powerful, brooding music is even better, perhaps the best thing in it.” —The Hollywood Reporter

Refn (Bronson, Pusher Trilogy), subject of a recent BAMcinématek retrospective, strikes again with this bone-crushingly brutal and stylized Viking epic set in 1000 AD. Mads Mikkelsen stars as One Eye, a mute warrior who joins a band of Vikings on a crusade to Jerusalem to conquer the Holy Land. Their doomed journey turns out to be a voyage into the very heart of darkness. Refn, a poet of violence, writes this gut-punchingly gory, hypnotically beautiful tale in the blood of his characters and backs it with a thundering drone metal soundtrack.

Directed by Lena Dunham
With Lena Dunham, Laurie Simmons, Grace Dunham, David Call, Alex Karpovsky

“While Ms. Dunham’s film may reflect the quandaries of a 23-year-old, there is nothing juvenile about its execution. Tiny Furniture brings to mind Larry David’s ability to take his own tics and add humor and stakes to make them matter to others.” —The New York Times

US, 2010, 98 min
NY Premiere!

Lena Dunham writes, directs, and stars in this SXSW Jury Award winner that concerns Aura, who returns home from her Midwest liberal arts college to her artist family’s Tribeca loft with nothing to show but a film studies degree, a failed relationship, and a total lack of direction. Taking a job as a hostess at a restaurant, she falls into relationships with two self-centered men while struggling to define herself. Dunham’s razor-sharp dialogue drips with caustic wit, perfectly calibrated to both cut and provoke laughter in this incisive examination of post-college ennui and self-actualization, meticulously shot by Jody Lee Lipes.

The Time That Remains (2009) 109min
Directed by Elia Suleiman
With Ali Suliman, Elia Suleiman, Saleh Bakri
The director of Divine Intervention returns with another personal and episodic feature about Arab life in Israel, adapted from his mother’s letters and his father’s diaries, written while his father was a scruffy Palestinian resistance fighter in 1948. Hearkening both Keaton and Tati, Suleiman’s idiosyncratic film is both a deadpan comedy and a poignant exploration of Palestinian identity over the last six decades.
Arguably Korea’s most entertaining filmmaker, Kim Ji-woon (A Tale of Two Sisters) returns with this
spectacular Korean spaghetti western. Visually audacious and with a heart attack-inducing pace, Kim’s
film needs to be seen on the big screen for its beautiful widescreen visuals and stylish action setpieces.
The plot may not make too much sense, but who cares when you’re having this much fun?!

Hadewijch (2009) 120min
Directed by Bruno Dumont
With Julie Sokolowski, Yassine Salime, David Dewaele
Deeply devout Céline (Sokolowski in a mesmerizing debut) is let go from a convent because of her
too-fervent faith. Forced to explore the outside world, she discards her haute bourgeois upbringing
after meeting Arab boy Yassine (Salime, also in an impressive debut). When Yassine introduces her to
his brother, a Muslim fundamentalist zealot, Céline’s ardent Catholicism takes an unusual (and
precarious) turn.

The latest semiautobiographical film from Palestinian-Israeli director Elia Suleiman (Divine Intervention) spans 50 years in the life of a middle-class Nazareth family. The filmmaker’s vignette style and tonal alternation between deadpan irony and melancholic detachment is in full effect, as the story skips from the “nakba” of 1948 on through the Seventies (Suleiman’s childhood and teenage years) and Eighties (with Suleiman as a lonely observer of his parents’ waning years). A tough and poignant work.

Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) leads a team of rising young talent from the new Romanian cinema to present urban legends from the era of Ceausescu (propagandized as a “Golden Age”). Chaos is the unifying principle of the six absurdist episodes in the omnibus, as society repeatedly grinds to a halt in deference to its ruler. The black humor and often ridiculous situations tap the rich tradition of satires that dismantle the illusions of totalitarianism.

PREVIEW SCREENING
Vincere
February 6 | 7:30 pm

One of Italy’s most highly regarded directors, Bellocchio was dubbed a master of “baroque” filmmaking in the mid-sixties with his first feature Fists in the Pocket, a corrosive portrait of a dysfunctional upper class family whose crazed, epileptic teenage son plots the death of his mother and brother. Though he directed thirty films during the next four decades, only a handful made it onto American screens, among them: China is Near, a stinging political satire that predicts the student revolutions of ‘68; The Devil in the Flesh, a sexually explicit adaptation of the Stendahl novel updated to 1980s Italy; and Good Morning, Night, a stark depiction of the 1978 kidnapping of Prime Minister Aldo Moro as seen through the eyes of a young female terrorist. His newest film Vincere (”To Win”) was hailed as a masterpiece and a return to form following its premiere at the 2009 Cannes Festival. By bringing to light the horrifying-and little-known-story of Ida Dalser, the young Mussolini’s first “wife,” who is thrown into an asylum by Black Shirts when she demands official recognition for herself and their son, Bellocchio takes the audience on a descent into the black hole of fascism. With its striking style that combines newsreels, silent films, and expressionistic graphics, and highlighted by a harrowing performance by Giovanna Mezzogiorno, the film brilliantly evokes the madness that gripped Italy under “Il Duce.”

In conjunction with the exhibition Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea (on view through February 14), MFAH Films presents the Houston premiere of the latest from award-winning Korean filmmaker, Hong Sang-soo.

In self-imposed exile from his native Seoul, a married painter wanders the streets of Paris. But a roundelay of chance meetings entangles him in the emotional lives of two Korean women. Hong lucidly observes this chronicle of one man´s confused attempt to savor a rootless year. “One of Hong´s lightest and most easily digestible metaphysical meals to date.”— Variety
This film is part of the Premieres film series.
Wednesday, January 6, 2010
Remis Auditorium

I’m Gonna Explode by Gerardo Naranjo (Mexico, 2009, 106 min.). Naranjo’s third film is a contemporary Mexican adaptation of Bonnie & Clyde. Roman—the son of a wealthy politician—meets Maru—a girl from the other side of the tracks—when he performs a mock hanging titled, “I’ll Meet You in Hell” at their high school talent show. She is the only person to applaud. The two run away together, hiding out on Roman’s father’s roof and mocking the world below. Deemed a modern-day Jean-Luc Godard film, I’m Gonna Explode channels the French New Wave in a romantic and absurd teenage escapade.
Members, seniors, and students $8; general admission $10

“Andrea Arnold confidently navigates the pitfalls of the ‘difficult’ second feature with Fish Tank, which confirms her status as a torchbearer for the social realist traditions of Ken Loach and the Dardenne brothers.” —Screen Daily

First-time actress Katie Jarvis delivers a stunning, emotionally raw breakout performance in Andrea Arnold’s festival hit. Rebellious, beer-swilling 15-year-old Mia (Jarvis) becomes entangled in a relationship with her mother’s boyfriend (Hunger’s Michael Fassbender), a situation that leads to explosive consequences. Arnold’s assured direction mixes gritty, kitchen-sink realism with profound humanism, coaxing fearlessly honest performances from her top-notch cast.

BIRDWATCHERS Opens Friday, Jan. 8th at FACETS!

In Mato Grosso do Sul, in the midwest of Brazil, the farmers who lead a wealthy and leisurely existence have huge fields, as well as hordes of tourists who come for bird watching. The Guarani-Kaiowá, the indigenous people who really own the land, are now confined to a nearby reservation and are paid to stand naked along the shores of the river in face paint to provide thrills for the visitors. Fed up with their officially-imposed financial and spiritual impoverishment, which has led to a wave of suicides, tribal leader Nadio and a local shaman organize a protest on former Guarani property that is now occupied by the deeply unsympathetic farmer Moreira and his cruel wife. As the two opposing worlds meet in an uneasy confrontation, a deep bond develops between the shaman’s young apprentice, Osvaldo, and the farmer’s bikini-clad daughter. Casting local non- professionals, director Marco Bechis draws out performances that effectively highlight the sharp clash between tyranny and a profoundly spiritual and ancient culture connected to nature. As the myths and realities of daily life are highlighted by striking visual contrasts of vast cultivated fields and lush forests and riverbeds, the two irreconcilable sides engage in metaphorical and actual war fueled by poverty and fear. Directed by Marcho Bechis, Italy/Brazil, 2008, 35mm, 108 mins.

Muriel (Marina Foïs) really wants to have a child, but she does not have any luck with men. One possible candidate for fatherhood is Philippe (Lorànt Deutsch), but there is a problem: she is his superior in a secret service spy cell and he is too intimidated to make a pass at the boss. They are assigned to track down Constance (Jeanne Balibar), believed to possess a vital USB key that may reveal her late husband’s history as a uranium trafficker. She is also the star pupil in a class for amateur opera singers and Muriel and Philippe decide to enroll in an effort to get close to the widow. They soon discover their vocal chops (as well enjoying the class) and a labyrinthine plot ensues, with a collectively duplicitous nest of spies, significant bed-hopping and some interesting songs (the highlight being Constance’s re-write of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” as “L’amour est fou”/”Love is crazy.”) Will the alternately quarrelling and loving spy couple find the key? That may not be the point in what novelist and filmmaker Ilan Duran Cohen (Grandsons, Confusion of Genders) calls an “anti-romantic comedy.” It’s actually much more than that: it may be France’s first sexy musical/comedy/spy caper/thriller.

Directed by Ilan Duran Cohen, France, 2008, 99 mins. In French with English subtitles.

When Caroline Link’s Nowhere in Africa won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2003, it ushered in a new era of visibility and vitality for German cinema. Now the director returns to the domain of the family, with its jagged terrain of loss and liberty. An enigmatic son has been the center of his mother’s life, and the source of his older sister’s angst. His untimely death opens deep rifts, which an artist attempts to navigate via a commissioned portrait of the siblings. The creation of the painting ignites passions, exposes loyalties, and ultimately offers the promise of a new beginning.’

Part of the Guy Maddin series.

Have you ever wanted to relive your childhood and do things differently? Guy Maddin casts B-movie icon Ann Savage as his domineering mother in attempt to answer that question in My Winnipeg, a hilariously wacky and profoundly touching goodbye letter to his childhood hometown. A documentary (or “docu-fantasia” as Maddin proclaims) that inventively blends local and personal history with surrealist images and metaphorical myths, the film covers everything from the fire at the local park which lead to a frozen lake of distressed horse heads to pivotal and factually heightened scenes from Maddin’s own childhood, all laced with a startling emotional honesty.
